Exterior Painting with high humidity

Failures of Exterior Painting With High Humidity

There are many considerations when preparing to carry out any painting job. One of the most important
among these considerations is the prevailing conditions in the area where the painting is applied.
Certain paints go well with certain conditions while others need to be applied with other supplements
such as clear varnish for the best results.

What are the best paints to use for high humidity areas?
For instance, you cannot use water- based paints for exterior painting with high humidity. This is
because moisture will seep in between the wall and the paint film causing peeling. For exterior walls,
you can never go wrong with oil-based paints, although the application of the same must be
professional. Read on for some of the common problems with exterior painting with high humidity.

 Wall chalking – Chalking is a common phenomenon with paint in high humidity areas, although
the first cause is exposure to sunlight. As time goes by, paint degrades due to exposure to ultra
violet radiation by weakening the bonds between its molecules. Degraded paint and moisture
combine to form a chalky white substance hence the name ‘chalking’. To remedy this, you need
to apply the right thickness of paint coat on your walls so as to slow down the ultra violet
degradation process. Better yet, contact us and we will do all the heavy lifting for you at a fair
price.

 Paint peeling – peeling of paint is occasioned by a prolonged exposure to moisture and is
therefore common in exterior painting with high humidity. Over time, cracks develop on walls
causing cracking of the external paint layer. When water gets in between the paint and the
walls, it weakens the adhesive bonds between the two surfaces hence resulting in peeling of
paint. To remedy this, you should regularly inspect your external walls and paint over cracks to
prevent entry of water.

 Paint blistering – Paint blisters are small spots of detached paint on a painted wall. They are
characterized by patches where the paint film is detached from the wall and are often caused by
painting over walls which are not completely dry. A single drop of water is a sure blister in the
near future. The remedy to this is to ensure that your wall is completely dry when you decide to
paint it.

 Paint fading – It is inevitable for every exterior painting job to fade over time. Fading is also
brought about by prolonged exposure to weather elements and there is nothing much you can
do about it except slow down the process. Application of a clear varnish on top of your dried
painted wall might do the trick.

 Paint cracking – Cracking of paint is a common phenomenon more so in cases where more than
one layer of paint is applied – which is often the case. When the rate of drying of one layer is
different from that of the other, cracking occurs.
